Dental Care Without the Anxiety

Fear of the dentist shouldn't mean living with pain or a smile you're unhappy with. At First Choice Dental, we offer multiple sedation options — including IV sedation with certified sedationist Dr Melissa Licenblat — so you can get the care you need while feeling completely at ease.

Sedation Options to Suit Your Needs

Whether you need a little help taking the edge off or prefer to sleep through your treatment, we have a sedation option for you.

Happy Gas (Nitrous Oxide)

A gentle, inhaled sedative that helps you relax within minutes. You remain fully conscious and can drive yourself home afterwards. Ideal for mild to moderate anxiety.

Oral Sedation

A prescribed tablet taken before your appointment produces a deeper level of relaxation. You'll feel drowsy but remain responsive. A companion will need to drive you home.

IV Sedation

Administered by our certified sedationist Dr Melissa Licenblat, IV sedation puts you into a deep state of relaxation. Most patients have little to no memory of the procedure. Ideal for severe dental phobia or lengthy treatments.

Is Sedation Dentistry Right for You?

Sedation dentistry can help if you experience any of the following. You're not alone — dental anxiety affects around one in six Australians.

  • Dental phobia or anxiety — even thinking about the dentist makes you anxious
  • Strong gag reflex that makes dental work uncomfortable
  • Complex or lengthy procedures such as implants, extractions, or full restorations
  • Special needs or conditions that make sitting still difficult
  • Past traumatic dental experiences that have kept you away

How Sedation Dentistry Works

Three simple steps to a comfortable, anxiety-free appointment.

1

Consultation

We discuss your concerns, review your medical history, and recommend the sedation option that suits your needs and the treatment planned.

2

Relaxed Treatment

On the day, your sedation is administered and monitored throughout. You relax while we complete your dental work — many patients don't remember a thing.

3

Recovery

You rest in our recovery area until you're ready to go home. For oral and IV sedation, a companion will need to drive you. We follow up to make sure you're feeling great.

Sedation Dentistry FAQs

Common questions about sedation at First Choice Dental.

Is sedation dentistry safe?

Yes. Sedation dentistry is well-established and safe when administered by qualified practitioners. Dr Melissa Licenblat is a certified sedationist who monitors your vital signs throughout the entire procedure. We conduct a thorough medical history review before recommending any sedation.

Will I be completely unconscious with IV sedation?

IV sedation is not a general anaesthetic — you remain in a deeply relaxed, semi-conscious state where you can still respond to instructions. However, most patients have little or no memory of the procedure afterwards.

How much does sedation dentistry cost?

Costs vary depending on the type of sedation and length of treatment. Happy gas is the most affordable option. We provide a full cost estimate at your consultation so there are no surprises, and payment plans are available through Mac Credit.

Can children have sedation dentistry?

Yes. Happy gas is commonly used for children and is very safe. For more complex cases, we can discuss oral or IV sedation options. Dr Melissa will assess your child's needs and recommend the most appropriate approach.

Do I need someone to drive me home?

For happy gas, no — you can drive yourself home. For oral sedation and IV sedation, yes — you'll need a responsible adult to drive you and stay with you for a few hours after your appointment.
